Fluorescent tubes are the perfect basic lighting for terrariums. They give a homogenous light and illuminate a large area. When it comes to energy efficiency, modern T5 systems are on level with most LED systems but offer the better price/performance ratio. Fluorescent tubes in general need a ballast or matching luminaire. Since light output and quality degrade with time, daylight lamps should be changed after two years, UV lamps after one year.
